In 1961, a group of women interested in theatre formed the Drama Department of the Newton Women's Club. In the spring of 1962, they produced a short religious play called “Promise of the Angels” for the women's club general meeting. The play was directed by Ann Krumm and the cast members were Liz Jones, Linda Campbell, Joy Faust, Louise Lasche and Laura Owens. In the spring of 1963, they decided to produce the play again and make it available to various groups for spring meetings.
