Iowa DOT Awards Funding for Phase 2 of Red Rock Prairie Trail

At their October meeting, the Iowa Transportation Commission approved $499,800 in funding for the Red Rock Prairie Trail: Prairie City to Mitchellville. The project was one of seven State Recreational Trails Program projects approved during the meeting.

The Red Rock Prairie Trail’s Prairie City to Mitchellville connection is phase 2 of the trail. Phase 1, completed in August 2022, is the 5.5-mile paved trail between Monroe and Prairie City. Like phase 1, the connection between Prairie City and Mitchellville will be a 10-foot-wide trail built on a former Rock Island Railroad spur line.

Preparation and design work for the Prairie City to Mitchellville connection is anticipated to occur in 2024, with construction expected in 2025.
