Ashton Wildwood Park is a 113-acre park that boasts old upland oak-hickory woods. Walking trails provide views of forested slopes and a variety of spring wildflowers. A half-mile walking trail features a self-guided interpretive exhibit. Visitors can pick up a guide at the park's trailhead.
Ashton Wildwood Park has an Astronomical Observatory, managed by the Des Moines Astronomical Society. The Society holds free public viewing nights for all ages on Saturday evenings–April through October–starting around 8 p.m., weather permitting.
